I was listening to CBC Radio 1 today, as I do every day (I work at home. Alone. My response to ‘How was your day?’ is usually a recap of Jian Ghomeshi’s excellent pop-culture show, Q). Anywho, my ears perked up today when 11:30 hit, Q ended, and the host started talking about the Shamwow infomercial. The segment marked the launch of the new time slot of The Age of Persuasion, a half-hour show about marketing hosted by Terry O’Reilly. It’s a great show, and I have always missed it due to its previous timeslot.
The intro brought me back to a Christmas party a few weeks ago where I fancied myself quite the crowd pleaser with a recount of the Shamwow infomercial and how much it made me want to get in on the action. I wanted to have my credit card handy so I could ORDER NOW. I needed it to sop up cola SO BADLY. There’s just something about it that I can’t resist. I don’t know whether it’s Vince (the Sham-seller) or what, but apparently Terry O’Reilly and I agree — the Shamwow gets the direct-response job done right. I felt so vindicated. (And a little bit of chagrin at the memory of my wine-fuelled Shamwow comedy routine.)
The Age Of Persuasion runs on CBC Radio 1 at 11:30 on Mondays and Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. Check it out, especially if you work in media.
