Fall TV issue, July 2010
Twelve hours prior to the writing of this article, two million viewers across Canada gathered in front of their TV sets, popcorn in hand, to say goodbye to one of the last cliffhanger-driven, “event” dramas in prime time. The day was May 23, and CTV was airing the series finale of Lost, a cinematic ender to six years of brow-furrowing plot turns and existential online debates.
As the show proceeded to its heavenly ending, the question arose: how many offbeat shows like Lost will continue to earn such loyal viewership in today’s fractured media landscape? Read More.

The summer issue of On The Bay has been out for a few weeks now, featuring, to my slight chagrin, lots of pictures of yours truly in it. I wrote a feature on paddling, and as usual for my OTB work, I like to do the activity I’m covering, and write from that experience.
But I have to admit, I didn’t really think this one through before jumping in my rental car and striking off up north. I had tried to get extra people in on the trip so they could be in the photos, not I, but bad weather pooched our first scheduled trip and no one else could make it to our rain date. When I left town at 6 a.m. on the day of the trip, my mind was only on the terror of making it up there alive (I drive, like, once a year), not on the fact I looked like crap. Ergo, there is a beautifully shot feature in the magazine with me all over it, looking like I just woke up. Nice one, Bailey!

Winter 2009
“Artist File: Dave Amos”*
Read it here
“The art department at SBC Media can be a pretty hectic place: a crazy mix of creative people, stressed-out editors, super-tight deadlines and hundreds of pages of editorial copy that need to be designed.
It’s in this chaotic mix where you’ll find Toronto artist David Amos every day….”

On The Bay magazine
2009 Winter issue
An inside look at the people and professions of Southern Georgian Bay’s ski resort community.
Read it here.
“There’s a lift attendant at Blue Mountain who does his job so well that I know that day will be a good day when he’s on duty. I’ll see him as we near the front of the usually packed lineup for the lift, directing traffic in a pleasurable, professional manner, making sure each six-person chair is filled to its capacity and no empty seat is left behind….”

Ski Area Management magazine, January 2009
When we debuted the “Under 30” list last year, we really had no idea what we were getting into. We thought it would be a nice way to recognize some of the hard working young people of the industry, those people who aren’t quite SAMMY eligible yet but show great promise early in their careers.
The response to the article, however, was far greater than we anticipated…. Read the whole story here.

Four pro riders share their wild tales and dicey dispatches from the farthest corners of the world.
Snowboard Canada Women’s Annual 2008
Travelling all over the world is one of pro snowboarding’s best perks. While the rest of us are lucky to squeeze in one trip per season, pro riders spend their winters gallivanting around to all sorts of places. Glamorous as it may seem, this privilege also comes with its share of hazards. Evil airline staff, homicidal hall-mates and death-defying drives are just some of the crazy situations pro riders Marie France Roy, Dominique Vallee, Spencer O’Brien and Sachi Tanaka have found themselves confronting over the course of their travels last season. Throughout the winter, we spoke to each rider about their most unusual destination and what it takes to travel to some of the farthest corners of the world.

Little Green Giants
by Katie Bailey
It’s not easy being green, especially when you’re little. Search “sustainable” and “ski” on the Internet and you find a wide selection of celebratory articles on what the Aspens and Whistlers of the world are doing to green their operations, but not a lot about what it’s like to be a small ski area pursuing an environmental agenda on a budget.
